Book Review: Living in the Zone

I received a review copy of Living Life in the Zone by Kyle Rote Jr., from BookSneeze.  The book is a devotional book for men based around sports and sports themes.  It calls itself 'a 40-day spiritual game plan for men.'

One thing I appreciate about the book is the effort to make spiritual truths accessible in a format that men will be interested in.  Of course not all men are sports guys, but a majority of my friends are, and I know this devotional guide will interest them.

The format of each day includes a thought of the day, along with Scripture, and then a 'game plan' section that walks you through some ways to apply the spiritual truth being presented.  The book is broken up into section involving your wife, your kids, your friends, your work, and your future.  These sections are called "zones" and the book is designed to help me live in the zone.  The idea of being in the zone as it relates to sports is the time when an athlete is focused, efficient, …

Charging Your Marriage Counseling On Mastercard: Priceless

Warren and his wife, Kay, say they know the danger of divorce all too well. Married more than three decades, with three children and four children, their own marriage had a very rocky start.
Rick Warren: We'd be divorced today if it weren't for Jesus Christ in our lives. The first two years of our marriage were hell on earth. And finally, we just humbled ourselves and said, "Let's go get a good Christian counselor to help us, a marriage counselor." And I racked up a $1,500 counseling bill on my Mastercard. I always thought, "Mastercard, a saved marriage? Priceless." (laughter) When people say, "I can't afford counseling," I say, "You can't afford not to get it." Thirty-three years later, my wife is my best friend.

C.S. Lewis on the Vulnerability of the Heart in Love

Great quote from C.S. Lewis shared by Justin Buzzard.
To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket- safe, dark, motionless, airless–it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.  - C.S. Lewis

End of the Softball Season

Today was the end of the softball season.  It was a fantastic season!  My team went 9-2 in the regular season and won the #1 seed in the playoffs.  In our first playoff game we beat St. Dominic White, a rival team whom we have never beaten before.  We finally fell in the championship game.

I had a fabulous time playing softball this year.  The team really bonded over the year and we had a lot of fun.  I can't wait for next year.
